DDoS Protection / WAF

DDoS Protection / WAF

DDoS protection is a service that can mitigate the impact of Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS attack) on server and network. DDoS attacks are considered one of the major security challenges to businesses and telecommunication infrastructure. Web Application Firewall (WAF) will protect underlying systems from these attacks by examining requests sent to these systems/networks. DDoS protection for domain name servers (DNS) is a service that can mitigate attacks on domain name servers.

A Denial of Service (DoS) attack is an attack that will disrupt online services by overloading systems and network resources. During this attack, services will be temporarily unavailable, and in some cases, it may cause a complete system or network failure. Cybercriminals perform this attack by either exploiting certain system vulnerability or by sending a huge number of malicious requests to the target system(s) or network(s) that will utilize all available resources, and as a result, systems will fail to respond to legitimate requests partially or completely.

In the last few years, because of rapid growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) applications like a smart thermostat, refrigerators, and many more, vendors tend to ignore applying security best practices when manufacturing these devices. As these devices are weak in defending against malware and in some cases are misconfigured, or using a known default password, attackers will easily be able to exploit such hardware to perform high magnitude attacks. For example, a DDoS attack using Mirai IoT botnet against DynDNS services that caused a worldwide internet outage. In 2014, Proofpoint Inc. uncovered an Internet of Things (IoT) based cyber-attack that was initiated from more than 100,000 everyday consumer electronics such as smart appliances, network routers, televisions, connected multimedia centers, and refrigerators.

Web Application Firewall (WAF)

Web Application attacks will attempt to exploit application vulnerabilities to take over servers, networks or steal data stored on different systems. Web Application Firewall (WAF) will protect underlying systems from these attacks by examining requests sent to these systems/networks.
